Apple’s surprise announcement on Monday that it will support advanced communication services for iPhones has sent shockwaves through the tech world, potentially bridging the long-standing green and blue bubble divide. The update is set to complement Apple’s iMessage system and is slated to arrive next year, marking a significant shift in the company’s approach. According to an Apple spokesperson, the RCS Universal Profile will provide a better interoperability experience compared to traditional SMS or MMS messaging.

After years of refusing to budge, the Silicon Valley giant has finally made the announcement. This decision comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook famously told a reporter from the Guardian to “Buy your mom an iPhone” when questioned about enhancing compatibility between Android and iPhone messaging.

In a statement to 9to5Google, Google stated that it “We welcome Apple’s participation in our ongoing work with GSMA to evolve RCS and make messaging more equitable and secure and look forward to working with them to implement this on iOS in a way that works well for everyone”.  Apple announced before the Thursday deadline to submit arguments to the European Union that iMessage is not considered a core service under the Union’s Digital Services Act, adding another layer of complexity as regulators assess whether iMessage falls under this classification. The inclusion of RCS support promises innovative features such as high-resolution image and video sharing, more reliable group messaging capabilities, location sharing within text threads, read receipts activation, and stronger encryption than traditional SMS and MMS services. In collaboration with GSMA members who developed these standards, Apple aims to revolutionize the messaging experience for iOS users while also addressing regulatory requirements if iMessage is deemed a core service.
